Country Music Hits Breast Cancer in Carrboro
Award-winning Raleigh singer-songwriter Debbie Liske brings a toe-tappin’, boot slappin’ (and maybe even a little tear-wipin’) night of current country hits to the ArtsCenter in Carrboro on Saturday, August 14 at 8 p.m. to benefit the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center. “Down Country: Deep-Down Living” takes a swipe at breast cancer with all the love, hope and fierceness driving the music of today’s top female country artists. Debbie and her full band bring it all to the stage, plus a few originals, to squarely add the power of music to the arsenal against the most common cancer striking women in our state. North Carolina recording artist Vaughan Penn also joins the show, leading off with her own brand of introspectively honest and passionate folk-pop-rock. Tickets are $11-$13, on sale at the ArtsCenter. 100% of ticket sales will be donated to the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center program for breast cancer research.
Comments from Debbie: “I’m not a country music artist, even though I do say “ya’ll “ a lot, but I really wanted to branch out and tap into this other world that I was so unfamiliar with. And then when I decided to do the benefit concert, it just all came together – a country music concert benefitting breast cancer. I only played orginal music and I didn’t even know the local country radio stations, so I gave myself several months to get some education. I started taking more voice lessons and I spent a week in Nashville during the CMA Musicfest. It was an amazing experience, but nothing compared to what I learned about cancer.
